Sleep that is slightly off. Energy that is inconsistent. Stress that is managed, but not optimally. Over time, these factors begin to affect focus, decision-making, recovery, and overall capacity.
Lifestyle medicine addresses these variables directly.
At Choulet Performance Psychiatry®, lifestyle medicine is not approached as a set of general recommendations, but as a structured, evidence-based framework for improving how you think, function, and sustain performance over time.
Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based specialty that utilizes lifestyle interventions to treat, reverse, and prevent chronic health conditions. Conditions that can be positively impacted by lifestyle interventions include cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, and mental health conditions. There are six primary pillars of lifestyle medicine: healthy diet, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, positive social connections, and avoidance of substances that can cause ill health. Through the use of lifestyle changes, one can treat the root of many chronic conditions.
Simply put: everyone! While many individuals have some strong pillars, it would be rare to find someone who does not have room for improvement in any of the lifestyle medicine domains. Sometimes individuals try to compensate for a deficient pillar by really maximizing another. While this may partly work for a time, the synergy of addressing all the pillars together can be much more beneficial. Tackling that area of lifestyle that does not come naturally to us is often challenging, and this is where a lifestyle medicine physician can be helpful. Behavior change is difficult, and a lifestyle medicine approach to health combines medical expertise with coaching approaches to help empower you to make the changes and take back control of your health. Even if you do not have any concerning symptoms, increased knowledge of lifestyle medicine can help you take steps to reduce the likelihood of ill health later in life.
Choulet Performance Psychiatry is a mental health clinic. Do I need to have a mental health issue to work with you on pillars of lifestyle medicine?
No, but you may find that certain aspects of mental health assessment and treatment are a part of our discussions. Dr. Bowen is certified in lifestyle medicine through the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine as well as in both Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. One theme that runs through parts of each of these areas of medicine is behavior change. Through this combination of training, Dr. Bowen is uniquely poised to address the mental challenges we face when trying to change our lifestyles to improve our health.
While lifestyle medicine is not positioned as a longevity-specific service, the two are closely aligned. Optimizing sleep, nutrition, stress, and recovery are widely recognized as foundational to both quality of life and long-term health. Many of the principles associated with longevity medicine are rooted in these same domains.
While he does not think of himself as a longevity physician, Dr. Bowen does think about longevity in his own life and the lives of his patients, and out of a passion for this topic completed an additional certification through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine to become a Blue Zones Certified Physician.
Lifestyle medicine is not about perfection or rigid routines.
It is about identifying the specific factors that influence how you function—and refining them in a way that supports both your performance and your long-term health.
For individuals operating at a high level, this work is often the difference between maintaining performance and truly optimizing it.
If you are looking to improve focus, energy, recovery, or overall mental clarity through a more structured and evidence-based approach, lifestyle medicine can be integrated into your care.
