ABOUT DR. BOWEN

Michael Bowen, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist and sleep medicine physician. His career has led him to respect the power of medical treatment in mental health, but also to understand how crucial it is to empower his patients with the knowledge and tools to improve their overall health and wellbeing. He treats a variety of conditions, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, and insomnia. He also works with individuals who may not necessarily have a mental health condition, but are nonetheless struggling through a difficult time, such as experiencing major life events or transitions.

While medications may be a primary focus for some of his patients, Dr. Bowen’s approach frequently puts a focus on therapy and lifestyle adjustments either in addition to or instead of medications. The formation of a treatment plan with Dr. Bowen is made through shared decision making, with Dr. Bowen serving to provide medical expertise, education, and coaching and you serving as an expert on yourself, including your treatment preferences. He aims to meet you where you are on your journey, and help you shift your trajectory in the direction of a healthy and satisfying life. He works with individuals 16 years and up.
Beyond minimizing unwanted symptoms, Dr. Bowen puts emphasis on a better understanding of self and the things that nurture a healthy person. Growing strengths and positive traits can go a long way to changing your experience of your life for the better. Mental health treatment should never just be about stamping out uncomfortable experiences, but learning to shape your choices to unlock your potential and improve your life. Dr. Bowen works with his patients using a framework of lifestyle medicine (the pillars of which are healthy diet, physical activity, restorative sleep, avoidance of toxins, stress management, and social connections) to craft an individualized plan upon which you can establish a foundation to experience better mental health throughout current and future life stressors.

Dr. Bowen is happy to see any individual who wants to improve their health through lifestyle changes, both in the short-term and the long-term, whether they have concerns about their mental health or not. He is certified by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine and additionally is a Blue Zones Certified Physician, and is thrilled to work with patients on how to optimize a healthy lifestyle and promote healthy longevity. However, it is important to note that Dr. Bowen is not a primary care physician (PCP), and does not manage non-psychiatric health conditions beyond the use of lifestyle interventions, so you will need to remain engaged with an appropriate PCP or specialist for the ongoing workup and medication management of your non-psychiatric medical conditions.
