Our brains play a vital role in how we think, feel, learn, and interact with the world. When changes in memory, attention, or behavior arise, it can be difficult to pinpoint the cause without a deeper look at how the brain is functioning. Whether you're dealing with a specific medical condition or simply noticing changes in how you process information, a neuropsychological evaluation can be an important step toward better understanding your brain and improving your overall well-being.
A neuropsychological evaluation is a detailed assessment designed to understand how your brain is functioning. It examines cognitive abilities like memory, attention, problem-solving, and language skills to help diagnose, manage, or rule out neurological, developmental, or psychological conditions.
The process begins with a comprehensive intake interview, where your psychologist gathers detailed background information, including your medical history and any specific cognitive concerns. This is followed by a series of standardized tests that are carefully selected to evaluate various aspects of brain functioning. These may be administered in a single extended session or split into multiple appointments, depending on your needs and endurance. While the total process may span 10 to 12 hours, including about 4 to 6 hours of face-to-face testing time, scheduled breaks are provided to help keep you comfortable and focused.
Once testing is complete, your psychologist reviews the results and compiles a thorough written report. This report outlines cognitive strengths and weaknesses and includes actionable recommendations.
Neuropsychological testing can be incredibly valuable for both diagnosis and treatment planning across a wide range of concerns. You may be referred for an evaluation if you or your provider suspect one of the following:
Traumatic brain injuries or concussions
Memory challenges, including possible Alzheimer’s or other dementias
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease
Stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)
Intellectual or developmental disabilities
Learning disorders
Emotional or mood-related conditions such as anxiety or depression
Age-related cognitive changes
IQ assessment for identifying giftedness
